z/OS Release 4 Migration
This presentation examines the practical aspects of performing a migration to z/OS Release 7 from brior supported releases of z/OS. A vanilla upgrade using ServerPac is assumed, without the implementation of any new function unless it is necessary to accomplish the migration. The focus of this presentation is to provide as much z/OS migration planning information as possible within an hour and fifteen minutes, covering migration issues, considerations, standard migration tasks, and release-unique migration tasks. The presentation will be downloadable in PowerPoint format, and contains a wide variety of active hyperlinks to information sources that provide further information on z/OS Release 7 migration.

Topics will include:

  • Presentation criteria and format
  • IBM support and availability considerations by release level
  • IBM coexistence, fallback, and other maintenance considerations
  • z/OS Release 8 directions (if IBM announces them)
  • Hardware considerations
  • Migration issues, such as withdrawn function
  • Key or major migration tasks
  • Summary of migration tasks by element
  • Migration tools
  • Question and answer sessions (time allowing)

Front End Processor conversions to TCP/IP networking
Up to 75% of the world’s data and applications resides in a computing environment wherein System Network Architecture (SNA) has been the dominant networking protocol. But that is changing rapidly: the growth of the World Wide Web and ecommerce make it imperative to provide mainframe access from more common clients than just SNA. As enterprises extend their networking capabilities to support new protocols, new applications, new users, customers, vendors and transactions, the Internet Protocol (IP) is experiencing significant growth. Gartner Group estimates that, by the end of 2005, TCP/IP will account for 80% of all wide area network traffic, with SNA at just 10%. Businesses and enterprises are not simply running SNA and IP side-by-side. They are, instead, migrating legacy networks, applications and clients towards TCP/IP.

Hercules OS/390 Emulation on a PC

Hercules is an emulator for all of the IBM mainframe systems from the 360 through the z/Series. This session will introduce you to the emulator and give you an idea of its capabilities. You'll also see it in action running a real copy of MVS from a CD you can take home, where you, too, can do systems work in your underwear. (Or whatever. Some things we're better off not knowing.)

Sam Knutson, software evangelist with the CBT archive of public domaine (FREE) software will be making this outstanding presentation. Mr. Knutson is a dynamic, enthusiastic believer in IBM zSeries technology and has worked his whole life on IBM mainframe technology in some flavor. Mr. Knutson delivers a spirited presentation on tools commonly available to the MVS systems programmer. Most of these tools are available at very little, if any, expense to your employer. If you come and see this presentation, your work productivity and knowledge will increase: guaranteed! Don't miss this opportunity to come out and learn something useful and get some great handouts to take home. This presentation is an updated version of the session most recently delivered at SHARE in Boston and the latest CBT materials on CD as well as other fun open source freeware tools will be handed out.

Two additional CD-ROMS will also be handed out:

  • Run MVS 3.8 on your PC with MVS Turnkey Project 3 by Volker Bandke. You can enjoy your own personal mainframe!
  • Use great windows freeware like Firefox, Thunderbird, and Open Office with the OpenCD 2.0. In addition the CD bonanza everyone will receive a Systems Programmer Quick Reference full of frequently needed utility and z/OS information.

A banquet of Free Software Tools and Toys!

The session will cover what's new and exciting in MVS Freeware and MVS web resources and put much of what is discussed in attendees hands to take home. In the past this has included:

  • Free e-books from Steve Samson, Bob DuCharme, and others about MVS
  • SHOWMVS, MXI, TASID, and other MVS System Information Tools
  • Free tools for mapping, copying and maintaining tapes
  • Free FTP and other PC tools specially adapted for use with mainframes
  • Virtual tape (AWSTAPE) tools
  • Tips on quickly deleting many data sets
  • How to find out who deleted a data set
  • Where to find, download, and use free tools for MVS

A brief overview on reading and optionally participating in the IBM-MAIN and other forums will be provided.

Contingency Access to Encrypted Enterprise Data

Many organizations are beginning to focus on data encryption not only from an Enterprise data center perspective, but also as data security is very important from a corporate citizen perspective as well. Now that mainframes, midrange servers, Windows/Unix/Linux servers are encrypting data, but now desktops and laptops are encrypting data as well, Enterprises need access to corporate data, even after it has been encrypted. The Enterprise should always have access to the data it owns, even if it is encrypted. This session explores how a contingency key can be incorporated into enterprise policy to provide access on a "as needed" basis to all encrypted data.

Building a Better Product through JCL Automation during Application Migration. Is your Application Migration Process automatically delivering optimized and standardized JCL?

Most companies have formalized their process for migrating an application through the various environments necessary to deploy it to production - Development, Unit Testing, Acceptance Testing, Quality Assurance, Production. The goal of the migration process is to deliver a high quality application product that is consistent, free of errors, cost effective, and delivers the desired results.

During the application migration process, JCL is developed, tested, corrected, and then environmental variables are modified between each stage of application testing. Automating the necessary changes and incorporating optimization techniques and the application of JCL standards will contribute to a highly efficient and consistent end product while reducing the time spent during the migration process. An added benefit of building a repeatable process to automate these changes is the ability to reproduce any environment quickly and ccurately.

This session will discuss automating changes to JCL environmental variables, applying standards and optimization changes, and the essential requirements for building a successful JCL migration environment.
